The new Thompson Center building means we can build a much-needed amenity that we do not currently have, an adaptive and inclusive playground.
The Thompson Center’s current behavioral therapy services provide outstanding care for patients. However, we currently have zero outside play space for children. Playgrounds are a very important part of socialization for all children, and children with autism need somewhere they can go to practice their social skills when they go to playgrounds out in their communities and schools.
The playground will provide a safe and empowering environment for the children we serve to improve their lives. They will be able to interact more with new potential friends, they will learn to listen to instructions outdoors so they can avoid unsafe situations, and they will get to experience the joy of play in ways that they may have been unable to before.
