(Washington, D.C.) – President Joe Biden has signed into law the “Think Differently Database Act,” spearheaded by Missouri U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt. This legislation aims to streamline access to vital resources for Americans with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers and families.
The Act requires the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish an online clearinghouse of resources and other information for individuals with an intellectual disability (and their caregivers and families) that is searchable by zip code. In particular, the clearinghouse must include information about (1) community-based services and long-term support services available through Medicaid; and (2) how to obtain health care, mental health care, and other relevant services. HHS must also promote awareness of the resources in the clearinghouse.
The platform will provide information on healthcare, mental health, and other community-based services available. A key feature of the website will be its zip code-based search tool, enabling users to locate resources and services within their local communities.
Senator Schmitt, emphasized the personal motivation behind his efforts. “I first entered public service because of my son Stephen, and fighting for individuals with disabilities has always been a top priority for me. I’m extremely proud that this critical piece of legislation was signed into law, but my efforts to improve the lives of those with disabilities will continue,” Schmitt said.
The “Think Differently Database Act” is expected to play a pivotal role in reducing barriers to information and ensuring that individuals with disabilities and their families can more easily access the support they need.
